Policy

Practice Commitment and Progress Monitoring

At Chromatic Music Academy (CMA), consistent practice is essential for student progress. Students are expected to follow these practice guidelines:
  • Beginners: 15-30 minutes, 4 days a week
  • Intermediate: 30-45 minutes, 4 days a week
  • Advanced: Minimum 60 minutes, 6 days a week
Each student will receive a detailed weekly practice plan and must document their sessions for effective progress tracking. Lessons encompass sight-reading, theory, improvisation, technical studies, etudes, and diverse repertoire.

Performance and Development

Students are encouraged to participate in annual assessments (Steinway, Guild, RCM, CM, ABRSM) and Academy performances at prestigious Bay Area venues. Opportunities for solo, collaborative, and chamber performances help students build strong portfolios for summer programs, festivals, and competitions.

Materials and Attendance

Parents or students purchase required books and materials. Punctuality (10-15 minutes early) and attendance are crucial for consistency and progress maximization.

Policy

Tuition, Schedule, and Fees

  • Tuition rates are non-negotiable and subject to a possible increase with three months’ notice.
  • Monthly payments are accepted via electronic transfer, cash, check, or credit card.
  • Semester-based tuition qualifies for a 5% discount.
  • Family discount (5%) applies to 30, 45, and 60-minute lessons.
  • Invoices are managed via My-Music-Staff.
  • Lessons are conducted exclusively at Chromatic Music Academy, 607 N 1st St., San Jose, CA 95112.

Rescheduling & Make-Up Policy

To maintain fairness and respect for our faculty’s time, CMA enforces a strict 72-hour rescheduling notice policy.
  • 72+ hours’ notice: Students may reschedule up to two lessons per semester, subject to availability.
  • Less than 72 hours’ notice: The lesson is forfeited and non-refundable.
  • Same-day illness or emergency: One emergency reschedule per semester is allowed, subject to instructor availability.

Make-Up Lesson Options

  • Virtual Lesson Alternative – If an in-person lesson is missed with less than 72 hours’ notice, a virtual lesson may be offered.
  • Group Make-Up Sessions – Students who miss a lesson may attend a monthly group masterclass covering key concepts.
  • Pre-Recorded Lesson Content – Students may submit a video of their practice for instructor feedback.
Policy

Hygiene & Health Guidelines

To ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment, CMA asks families to adhere to these hygiene protocols:
  • Handwashing: Students must wash or sanitize their hands before every lesson. Hand sanitizer is provided at the Academy.
  • Illness Precautions: If a student has cold, flu, or contagious symptoms, they should opt for a virtual lesson or use their emergency reschedule.
  • Instrument Hygiene: Students must clean personal instruments regularly and avoid sharing mouthpieces or reeds.
  • Studio Cleanliness: Students are encouraged to keep lesson spaces tidy and dispose of trash properly.

Holiday & School Calendar

  • CMA follows the San Jose Unified School District Calendar and will be closed on major holidays.
  • Minor holidays will be accommodated within the lesson schedule.
  • The summer schedule (June 1 – July 31, 2025) will be adjusted based on student-submitted vacation weeks.
